🌄 Valbonë: The Heart of the Albanian Alps

Tucked away in the far north of Albania, Valbonë is a hidden jewel embraced by dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, and the clear waters of the Valbonë River. The valley, part of Valbonë National Park, is a haven for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking tranquility away from urban bustle. The crisp mountain air and traditional stone guesthouses set the tone for a deeply immersive and authentic Albanian experience.

While in Valbonë, travelers often hike to Kukaj village or relax along the riverbanks. If you’re more adventurous, the famous Valbonë to Theth hike—one of the Balkans’ most iconic treks—is a rewarding challenge. However, for those heading toward Shala River and Koman, the journey continues by road toward the Fierza ferry terminal, typically arranged by guesthouses or local transport providers.

🚤 Lake Koman & Shala River: Nature’s Masterpiece

From Valbonë, the journey leads to Fierza, where you board the ferry that glides across Lake Koman—a man-made reservoir formed by the Drin River. This ferry ride is no ordinary transport; it’s considered one of the most breathtaking boat journeys in Europe. Towering cliffs, emerald-green water, and lush forested slopes surround you as the ferry weaves its way through the narrow canyons. It feels more like navigating a Norwegian fjord than an Albanian reservoir.

Partway through the lake voyage, you disembark near Shala River, sometimes referred to as “the Thailand of Albania” due to its surreal turquoise color and steep limestone cliffs. Accessible only by boat, the Shala River is the ultimate retreat for nature lovers. Once there, you can swim in the crystal-clear waters, hike along secluded trails, or simply relax at a riverside guesthouse built from wood and stone. Some tours allow a few hours to explore, while others offer overnight stays in simple yet charming cabins—perfect for stargazing in utter silence.

This part of the journey is both soothing and surreal, a dramatic contrast to the rugged peaks of Valbonë. Here, time slows down, and nature speaks in hushed tones.

🏞️ Koman: Gateway to the North

After your stay or visit at the Shala River, you return by boat to Koman village, the ferry terminal at the southern end of Lake Koman. While Koman itself is a small and quiet settlement, it serves as a crucial transit point for travelers connecting to Shkodër or Tirana.

Depending on your tour package, you may stop briefly in Koman or continue directly to your final destination. The road from Koman is winding and scenic, descending from the highlands through remote villages, forests, and farmlands.

🏙️ Shkodër: Culture, History, and Warm Hospitality

After days immersed in nature, the lively city of Shkodër offers a vibrant contrast. Located on the shores of Lake Shkodër and beneath the gaze of Rozafa Castle, the city is one of the oldest and most culturally rich in Albania. As you arrive, you’ll feel the shift—from the wild and isolated north to a city buzzing with history, music, art, and youthful energy.

In the evening, stroll through the pedestrian boulevard known as Rruga Kole Idromeno, lined with cafes, boutique shops, and pastel-colored buildings that reflect the city’s Italian and Ottoman influences. You can visit museums like the Marubi National Museum of Photography, explore the ancient Rozafa Castle with panoramic views of the lake, or take a bike ride around the quiet countryside.

Shkodër is also a hub for further travel—whether you’re heading south to Tirana, east toward Kosovo, or north to Montenegro. But before you go, be sure to savor the local cuisine, from freshly baked byrek to seafood dishes caught from the lake.

Notes:

– At Shala River, there are restaurants and guesthouses with traditional Albanian food, where you can eat. This is not included in the travel ticket. Travel ticket includes bus and boat transportation only.

– We inform you that, if the level of Komani Lake falls below the normal value (rare cases), we will walk for approximately 20 minutes.
